ABS-CBN Launches New Afternoon Current Affairs Programs
by Gary Ann Lastrilla | August 07, 2013 2:17 PM |

On August 6, 2013, ABS-CBN held a Press Conference to introduce the network’s new current affairs programs for the afternoon timeslot. Broadcast journalists Julius Babao, Karen Davila, Doris Bigornia, Atom Araullo, and Anthony Taberna were at the event to represent their respective afternoon public affairs shows and to shed light on personal issues.

From Mondays to Fridays, viewers will be inspired, empowered and enabled through the stories that will be featured, according to Ging Reyes, head of the Integrated News and Current Affairs Division in her opening remarks.

Informative Mondays will have Julius Babao focusing on exposing violence, sexual violations, and injustices in Bistado. The show features different modus operandi of criminals and then helps authorities rescue victims. It also reinforces the station’s stand on public service through “Sumbungang Bayan” where citizens are encouraged to come forward and help in stopping crime.

When asked if he has had any death threats related to his exposes, Babao replied, “I’ve always been fair naman sa mga ine-expose ko. Hindi kami ‘yung tipong programa na kapag may nahuli ka, diyan ka na sa kulungan. Nag-eexert kami ng effort para kunin ang side nila.” Furthermore, he said that this process helps people to realize their offenses. “Basta sa akin, nag-iingat ako” Babao said.

Tuesdays will have Doris Bigornia as Mutya ng Masa, a show which aims to give ordinary citizens joy through ordinary things. What Bigronia like about its concept is getting in touch with average people and giving them feel-good moments. “Lalo ko pang nagustuhan when they said na para ka lang magbibigay kaligayahan sa kanila. How? By asking them what would make them happy. Hindi naman‘yung mga bonggang bongga at talagang napakalalaking wishes like gusto ko ng bahay at lupa…kotse…ang konsepto ay simple lang.”

Karen Davila’s My Puhunan on Wednesdays focuses on inspiring stories of rag-to-riches entrepreneurs. Davila shared that in her 20 years of being a journalist, it’s the first time she felt excited over a show’s format and concept. “Gusto kong makita ng mga viewers natin na this is different, it’s rags to riches. Pero ‘yung riches na may saysay… We wanted a program na may matutunan ‘yung tao…’Yung My Puhunan, it’s our way of letting them know na kahit maliit na bagay, pwede kang kumita ng pera,” said Davila.

The successful businessmen and women who will be featured are mentor struggling entrepreneurs who wish to make it big in life, too, while TV viewers are given practical tips as well. “I feel very proud and passionate because this is a show where the viewer is inspired and it’s informative.” When asked if she has a personal inspiration she would like to invite on this show, the veteran journalist said she rather keep her guests’ stories attainable and relatable by the masses.

Meanwhile, it’s a heated Thursday when Anthony Taberna dares controversial personalities to truthfully bare it all in Tapatan ni Tunying. Taberna shared that this show’s concept will go beyond politics and national issues and focus on personalities and ordinary citizens too that are involve in controversies. Taberna has a requirement for his interviewees and that is, “Ang commitment lang na hinihingi ko sa kanila, kailangan ito tapatan, walang itatago. Kung anuman ‘yung matanong naming, sagutin niyo.” He also revealed that Chito Miranda, Gloria Arroyo, and PNoy are his prospects for interview. But when asked if there is a person he feels intimidated and avoids interviewing, he joked, “Wala akong gustong iwasan na interview, maliban lang siguro sa Inglisero baka magastusan pa ko sa tissue.”

Lastly, a scary afternoon will end each workweek with Atom Araullo’s Hiwaga. This show tries to explain and unravel mysteries of the paranormal. Regarding his own paranormal experiences, Araullo admitted, “Seeing ghosts, other elementals, entities, mahina ang radar ko dyan so hindi talaga ako nakakaramdam… pero marami akong mga kakilala na mayroong ganun klaseng karanasan na naririnig ko din so yung ang pinaghuhugutan namin ng inspirasyon sa mga istorya namin.” He said that he doesn’t get scared while they shoot in haunted areas but it’s another thing when they review the episode.

Bistado, Mutya ng Masa, My Puhunan, Tapatan ni Tunying and Hiwaga air Mondays to Fridays at 4:15PM on ABS-CBN.
